Day 8: A Pirate's Life for Me!

My first ever job was working at a kennels. I washed, walked and fed dogs, cats and the occasional rabbit, although less washing and walking was required for the latter species. But I was volunteering rather than being paid, so I’m not sure if it really counts.

I think I will write about a job that was more recent and less temporary, but felt to me like my first proper job. On reflecting about my experience with my sister, we came to the conclusion that the establishment could have easily been a Pirate Ship (I shall write about it as if it were such). The crew struck me as a rather dysfunctional family where everyone gossiped and complained about everyone else, but there’s a sense of  unspoken solidarity which comes from belonging to the same ship.

And so, without further ado I shall regale to you a little about the mismatched members of the ship. Firstly there was the Captain, who was more interested in telling yarns and singing the crew sea shaties than actual 'Captaining'. That was left to the First Mate, who did all the real work and generally kept the ship afloat. He slightly resented the presence of the Captain’s mistress as well as the Captain's own lacklustre ways. The aforementioned lady was rather younger than the Captain, but much more determined and forthright. And even more than with the First Mate, she oftern came into conflict with the ship’s cook, who’s temper, when at work, was as short as his stature. When not cooking he was an amiable chap, but his temprament still contrasted against his large and gentle assistant. Lastly there were two identical cabin boys, who felt the most of the cook’s wrath but did most of the work!

So all in all, it was a very interesting experience!

Day 7: Pets

My first pet was a Guinea Pig. I named her Olga, after the guinea pig in Michael Bond’s book series. She lived in a hutch on our patio with her three sisters (although I don’t know if they were actually from the same litter) who belonged to my brother and my sisters. When winter came, we moved their home into the rickety old shed at the bottom of the garden. And installed a heater and insulation to keep them cosy during the cold months. Unfortunately, the move meant that my brother and I (who took it in turns to feed them every day) had to undertake the perilous journey down the dark and overgrown pathway to the shed. Happily, this did not continue for too long, as a brand new shed was built, at the back of the house.

Shortly after the four furry bundles had established themselves as members of the family, it was discovered that Olga was pregnant. Had been in fact when we had bought her. So four guinea pigs became six. But as my parents did not want the brood to multiply any further, Boris had to go to a new home, but Poppy remained with us. And forever afterwards Olga remained a little pear shaped.

But as happens with all furry creatures, one by one they left us for the dandelion field in the sky. I was desperate for another pet. After many years of persistence (outlined in an earlier post: http://jennyisinwonderland.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/introducing-teddie.html) my parents finally relented to my puppy pleas and Teddie arrived!

Day 1: Five Lines

The first day of Rosalilium's Blogging Every Day in May. Hopefully I manage to stick to it! So here they are...five lines about me:

I have a tendency to over-think and a tendancy to worry too much about what other people think

I fascinated by the past and worry too much about the future

I’m very competitive but don’t like competing

The world of books appeals to me rather more than my own

I still feel like I’m waiting for my life to begin

I tend to be the person wielding the camera, so have few photos of myself, even fewer that are tolerable. So here is one I took. For me it was a realisation that pictures in my head could be brought to life.

My Own Little Corner

So I have finally claimed a little corner of the internet as my own. A home for my musings, creations and lots of pretty things. Thank you if you have joined me here. I’m just another nineteen year old girl, who spends more time dreaming about life than living it. So will try writing about it instead!
